A New York City Green Market

Have you ever been to a green market?

Each week I visit the Union Square farmer’s market in New York City. I’ve come across all sorts of exciting and exotic vegetables I never saw in Japan. Every time I would see these, I would get ideas for cooking and capturing them as art.

Many colorful vegetables are standing side by side. The air is hot and sun shines strong in the summer while the wind is freezing and breezes are icy in the winter. There are definitely seasons in green markets. Vegetables in a green market are seasonal and grown in an area very close to the market. I simply want to capture sense of nature I find in the bright and solid colors, sharp and powerful aromas, and rich tastes of the vegetables and fruits.

Through my eyes, it might be the odor of soil on roots, or a lusty fragrance from peaches in scorching daylight. For whatever reason, it becomes a part of the picture when watercolors meet the paper. I believe my illustrations can tell a story of my experience with these vegetables. I’d like to invite you to view and enjoy all of these vegetables with me.

Rome Beauty Apples are everywhere. Almost every store booth
has hot apple sider. It reminds me that winter has arrived. After
thanks giving, I see less pumpkins and more apples. So, my blog
pages about green markets have to follow the trend of the market.
The next should be a cute and delicious apple!

I went out for the market as usual. But the variety of apples is
countless. I didn't know which one to take since there are a
few kinds of apples in Japan. Red Rome looked specially
cute with vermilion and chartreuse. I got some of it. A woman
at the store told me Red Rome is the king of baking apple.
If you hear that, you won't refuse making baking apples,
will you?

I removed the core with an apple corer, and
placed the filling--combination of sugar, cinamon, raisins,
and pecans. Put a piece of butter on the top, and baked
it in a oven for 40 min. It was my first experience to mak
e and eat a baked apple, and I must say that it was
great success. Baking apple will be my new winter habit.
